It is a well known fact that 80% of the traffic which will be generated for your website will come from the search engines. Hence, search engine optimization (SEO) techniques have been the weapons of choice for many webmasters so that they’ll be able to position their web pages in the first few pages of search engine results.
Google is the number one search engine in the World Wide Web today. In a 2004 study by the University of Houston Small Business Development Center, it was revealed that Google controls 54% of the search engine market, with the remaining half of the pie being vied for by the other search engines.
As such, webmasters have focused their SEO campaigns on placing favorably well in Google search results. Breaking Google’s mysterious algorithm has become the Holy Grail for most webmasters and SEO practitioners the world over.
But the question is… are we focusing on the wrong search engine?
54% of internet users may be using Google, but what about the other 46%?
You see, it’s a constant race to secure the no. 1 spot at Google. This drives many webmasters. And because of this, fewer people are actually focusing their campaigns on other search engines.
Most notably MSN.
MSN has in fact been getting great reviews recently. A lot of people are hailing the ease by which they could get top billing for particular keywords. Proper SEO techniques, they say, is enough to get the job done. There’s no need for other variables like age of domain, age of links, keywords in URLs and the likes. Give good, unique content, optimize your keywords, and you’re good to go with MSN’s search engine.
The only downside that people have experienced with MSN is that success with this search engine is quite inconsistent. MSN uses a different set of algorithms. This has led to some uncanny results. Webmasters who rejoiced for having claimed the top spot with one of their keywords one day are all aghast when their spot drops down by 5 notches the morning after. But then again, it would rise back to the top then drop again.
Equal opportunity script?
Perhaps. Perhaps not.
But the point is, you could succeed with MSN, and your chances with this search engine are far better than your chances with Google. This is because of the many outstanding benefits that you could derive from this alternatively focused approach. Let’s take a look at them.
* Focusing on MSN would allow you to capitalize on an area that most of your competitors have yet to explore, since they’re all busy winning Google’s favor.
* Focusing on MSN would allow you to make good use of basic SEO strategies, since MSN’s algorithm isn’t as strict nor as fickle as Google’s.
* Focusing on MSN would allow you to reach a market that Google does not provide. Indeed, this market may be smaller, but at least, there is fewer competition.
* Websites get indexed faster with MSN. Whereas with Google, it would take a week to a few months before you’d see your web pages in search results, you’d be able to see your web pages displayed at MSN in just a few days.
This scenario is just like a box of pizza. Would you rather have 12 slices that will be shared by 50 people? Or should you settle for a slice that you, and you alone, can savor and enjoy?
MSN may be the alternative route, but it is a road worth taking, especially in a time when Google has everyone’s attention. This is your chance to be king.
